There are many different cuisines that have made a strong mark on Mexican cuisine. Whether it be tacos, burritos, pasta, or some other specialty you can think of, there is no shortage of food to choose from. With the growing popularity of Mexican restaurants and the demand for authentic dishes that appeal to all taste buds, more and more people have been looking for unique recipes that will put them next in line to enjoy these special sauces of Mexico City. This list is compiled by the top ten most popular Mexican dishes as well as their ingredients and how they are prepared.

1. Fajitas

Fajitas are one of the most famous foods of Mexico with its distinct spice profile and aromatic flavor. It is served with salsa verde in large bowls, which makes it one of the best-selling dishes in town. Fajitas are also a mainstay at any Tex Mex Café, but these traditional taco stands tend to focus more on the quality of the meat, than the spice. Still, with many great options available, Fajitas are still a favorite.

2.Macarons

What better way to end a meal than with macaroni and cheese? Traditionally a dessert, this classic Italian dish has evolved into a staple of many Mexican households. For those who love cheesecake as much as I do, McDonald’s also offers an excellent variety of flavors like chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla to add another layer of flavor to any meal. If you are always craving something sweet, consider ordering your cheesecake and macaroni and cheese through their drive-thru window.

3. Elote

Elote is definitely one of my personal favorites, especially when it comes to Taco Bell. But what originally started out as a spicy sauce, has taken a whole new meaning in the form of an entrée. Made up of beans and cream, Elote is a must-try for anyone looking to try tacos and more importantly, to experiment with flavors, especially if its prepared by La Leche. Elote is often made in smaller size portions and is easy on the stomach, offering a great alternative to traditional taco toppings. The secret to making Elote lies in its ease of preparation, which often leaves the flavor intact.

4. Quesadillas

The name itself suggests ‘quests’, but these little tortilla sandwiches come together perfectly to complete the dining experience. These soft and fluffy quesadillas make for a fun snack in between meals, and are easy to bring home to your guests. I must admit I never wanted to try anything spicy until I tried Quesadillas and instantly fell in love with their versatility and freshness. They definitely are not required for brunch, nor their crunchy texture is too high on the menu. However, having a hearty bowl in the morning before breakfast is probably enough.

5. Gordita

Gordita is a delicious staple of Mexican culture. Usually eaten during the cold winter months just after Christmas without fail, gordita can be considered one of the finest meats of the world and has become very similar and loved by Mexicans since ancient times. So, why wouldn’t you want nothing to do with meat? To give you a slight insight on how gordita was traditionally made and how it has evolved over time, check this video below from How Tacos Trecemos!

6. Salad Chorizo

This golden brown chorizo is usually served to add some color to the table and can be found in a wide range of Mexican restaurants. It is so tender and rich that it is easily one of the most sought-after items on the restaurant menu. While salado chorizo is a staple of almost every Mexican restaurant, there are certain ones that offer the savory and nutty flavor that brings it to life. We can’t forget about our fried rice and queso gordita, although with a few tweaks and changes, these two delicacies have become more of family favorites.

7. Molcajete Sauce

Molcajete sauce can be found in practically every local Mexican restaurant, but is mostly known as this tangy green liquid you find in eggplants. It was invented back in the early days when eggs were a luxury item in women’s kitchens. In fact, only four years ago did we see the first version of the tomato paste sold in the United States. That’s right, at Walmart! One of my go-to sauces of Mexican cooking, Molcajete is a true treat for anyone who loves Mexican food. Molcajete sauce is extremely simple and doesn’t require an elaborate recipe for getting perfect results. Just serve it with tacos and chips. You won’t regret it.

8. Churros

Churros are a classic Mexican dish, which is often topped with shredded cheese in order to make it extra thick. Although these tasty treats have gained popularity in recent years, Churros remain the original type of churro. You can literally pick them up at nearly every store and they come in such a wide array of variations as different colors, shapes, and sizes. My favorite and one of the easiest ways to get ahold of them, is by making breakfast tacos with cheese sauce, then topping grilled chicken with a slice of hot cheese and plenty of churros. Their simplicity is unbeatable, and there are a plethora of creative ways to incorporate them into various types of tacos.

9. Tortillas

Tortillas are among the earliest forms of American foods, and were among the best innovations of their time. Back then, these flat tortillas are shaped like bricks; not like bread, but instead, they are shaped like bricks and filled with bread. While tortillas may initially not have had as much success as flour tortillas for mass-produced products, it wasn’t until the 1960’s, that it became easier to produce and popularized. Today, we have tortillas in every store imaginable, and even have created some modern versions. Even though tortillas are quite versatile, they are only truly appreciated when served with quesadillas or churros.

10. tacos con carne

And you just might not be able to stop eating tacos at lunch time, but Taco Tuesday is here for you! When you buy your tacos online for delivery and take them home, they have arrived. Nowadays, a taco con carne is basically a baguette-shaped tortilla stuffed with cheese, beans, and chili. No matter where you eat tacos, they will always remain a big part of Mexican Cuisine. Therefore, making a reservation for tacos con carne can save you a lot of money since you don’t need to worry about waiting long. Plus don’t you dare tell me your tacos con carne are not good!
